The licences issued by the authorities establish thresholds to limit pollutant emissions to air and to define how waste must be disposed of. Licences also determine how much the facilities may discharge to rivers, lakes or wastewater treatment facilities. The many environmental regulations in Germany provide the foundation for the limits which the authorities prescribe. Many of these regulations are now founded upon European provisions.

In order to comply with all of these rules, facilities invest in various items such as filter systems or, more frequently, in recovery systems which can also be profitable and use resources like water or energy more efficiently.
